Hillary Announces the Women's World Cup Initiative

Yesterday, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton delivered a speech in the Benjamin Franklin Room of the State Department, announcing the launch of the Women’s World Cup Initiative. As a great way to celebrate Title IX, which speaks against the discrimination in any ways on the basis of sex, this initiative includes Sports Visitor Program, Sports Envoy Programs and Women’s Sports Management so as to empower girls and women in the playing field around the world.

In her speech, Hillary talked about her own experience with soccer when she was in junior high and emphasized the importance of sports for girls and women. In her perspective, “sports programs teach girls of every income level and ethnic background about leadership and teamwork, about supporting one another.”

According to Hillary, sports is also a symbol of “what we want to see in the world”. She said:

“As long as human beings are on this planet, we’re going to compete. But let’s compete with rules. Let’s compete in a way that doesn’t kill people.”

The Women’s World Cup Initiative will not only assist girls and women in getting more opportunities in the sports field, but also increase mutual understanding between different nations in the way of sports exchange. Just as Hillary has said, sports exchange is the easiest and one of the most popular ways to communicate between two countries.
