Welcome to Shelbyville - a Recommendation

By Liz Wing on 05/26/2011 @ 02:57 PM

This week a film screening was hosted by the U.S. Department of State's office on Population, Refugees and Migration. The film, Welcome to Shelbyville, offered a glimpse into a small town in Tennessee in a time of a growing Latino population and a recent arrival of Somali refugees. The film explores the racial tension and the mindset of town residents. The film also explores immigrant integration and the relationships that develop among residents from all faiths and backgrounds.

A small group made up of residents from varying ethnic and religious backgrounds establishes a "Welcome to Tennessee" program in efforts to help newcomers feel welcomed and become acquainted with the Tennessee way of life. Because of its success, the program has been replicated in towns across the country.

Welcome to Shelbyville is a documentary film about immigration, community and the unexpected friendships that are forged.
