State Department Releases Trafficking In Persons Report

By Liz Wing on 10/28/2009 @ 04:06 PM

Yesterday, June 16th, the State Department released the ninth annual report on trafficking persons. The report breaks down the prevalence of human trafficking country by country. It points out special cases, Haiti and Somalia in particular need, and the effect that the economic crisis has had on the rise of human trafficking. The report also provides solutions for reducing human trafficking in a range of unique cases and regions.

A few quick facts that the State Department has shared:
(UN International Labor Organization Estimates)
• 12.3 million adults and children at any time, in forced labor and sexual servitude
• 1.39 million victims of sex trafficking, both national and transnational
• 56% of forced labor victims are women and girls

The Trafficking In Persons Report points out recent successes where progress has been made and where much more is needed.

Today the Washington Post published an op-ed by Secretary Clinton on how and why we need to work together to abolish human trafficking. She ends with this: “Together, we must hold a light to every corner of the globe and help build a world in which no one is enslaved.”
