UPDATE: Secretary Clinton to Speak in Honor of the 15th Anniversary of the UN World Conference on Women

By Leecia Eve on 03/11/2010 @ 02:00 PM

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to Speak in Honor of the 15th Anniversary of the UN World Conference on Women in Beijing this Friday, March 12th at 3 pm EST at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.

To watch a webcast of the event, visit the UN Website.

Yes, it has been fifteen years since that day in September 1995 when then-First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton proclaimed at the United Nations’ Fourth World Conference on Women that “women’s rights are human rights, and human rights are women’s rights.” In so doing, she sent a message of hope and aspiration that continues to resonate today, from kitchen tables in American cities to small villages in countries around the globe.

During the Fourth World Conference, the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action – considered by the UN “as the most comprehensive global policy framework to achieve the goals of gender equality, development, and peace" – was adopted by 189 countries. Though progress has been made, the twelve issue areas addressed by the Platform for Action – poverty, education and training, health, violence against women, armed conflict, women in the economy, power and decision-making, institutional mechanisms, human rights, the media, the environment, and girls – remain at the forefront today.

As I write, the United Nation’s Commission on the Status of Women is meeting in New York and is undertaking a fifteen-year review of the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, emphasizing the sharing of experiences and good practices, with a view toward overcoming remaining obstacles as well as new challenges. The Commission, Member States, United Nations entities and NGOs have been holding events since March 1st. The culminating event will be Secretary Clinton’s address this Friday, March 12th at 3 pm EST at the United Nations. She will speak to the progress the world has made toward meeting the Platform for Action goals, the work that is left to do, and the critical role that women play in achieving the foreign policy goals of the United States.

Visit the UN website to watch a webcast of Secretary Clinton’s speech (Friday, March 12, 3 pm EST) and also for more information about the current meeting of the Commission on the Status of Women and the fifteen-year review.
