Giving Back

By Liz Wing on 05/20/2009 @ 06:31 PM

I recently attended another touching event at the Sewell Belmont House in D.C., the former organizing ground of the suffragist movement. The event was a Women and Giving Event, Honoring Edie Fraser and the Girl Scouts of America. This event featured a host of women who have given back, and highlighted Fraser’s new book, “Do Your Giving While You Are Living”. Edie Fraser is a long-time philanthropist and a leading fundraiser for women running for office. It would be hard to count just how many lives she has touched.

There were many great speakers, from U.S. Senators, to young girl scouts, and I am going to share some of their anecdotes with you.

U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) – in referencing a quote she keeps on her refrigerator:
“I am only one – but I am one. I can’t do everything – but I can do something.”

U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) – in telling a story about how her young daughter was afraid to play the role of an angel in a school play - because she couldn’t fly.

“Not all angels fly.” Looking out into the crowd of women who do great work for great causes, “You all are angels for what you do.”

An inspiring young Girl Scout - on being president:
“If Hillary Clinton or any of the speakers here tonight don’t become the first female president of the United States, I assure you, one of us Girl Scouts will.”

Hats off to Edie Fraser for this great event! The photo below captures a great moment between Senator Debbie Stabenow and Edie Fraser.
