A Warm Welcome to Justice Elena Kagan

No Limits would like to welcome Elena Kagan to the High Court! Last Thursday she was confirmed with a 63-37 vote by the Senate. On Saturday, she was sworn in by Chief Justice Roberts as the 112th Supreme Court Justice of the United States of America, the fourth-ever female on the court and the youngest to be sworn in at age 50. This is truly a historic moment for the country with three women on the bench simultaneously - one-third of the court. Two of these women were sworn in back-to-back with Justice Sonya Sotomayor's confirmation just last year. Justice Kagan will be installed in a courtroom ceremony when the court's next term begins on October 1. In the meanwhile, she will be reviewing cases as well as emergency appeals.

Senator Tom Harkin of Iowa issued this press release following the Senate confirmation that stated in part:

"[T]hroughout her career, including as a professor of law, as a key advisor to President Clinton, as Dean of Harvard Law School and as Solicitor General, she has demonstrated a great mind and intellect...And at the heart of her credentials is a strong sense of justice for those at the bottom of the economic ladder."
