Celebrating Women

By Liz Wing on 03/12/2010 @ 04:00 PM

It has been quite a week for women! Monday was International Women’s Day. Organizations celebrated with conference calls, events, and dedications to leaders around the world.

Melanne Verveer, Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues at the State Department held an event allowing the Women of Courage honorees an opportunity to share their stories with the public. The ten honorees were women from all over the world working to stop human trafficking, end discrimination, promote human rights and advance social services for women. They have risked their lives for the advancement of women and girls.

On Wednesday, also at the State Department, Secretary Clinton hosted the annual Women of Courage Award Ceremony where she further honored the work these women are doing to serve women and girls around the globe. Click here for the video of the event.

Wednesday evening Vital Voices held their annual Global Leadership Awards in Washington, DC. Honorees included women working on global health and equal opportunities around the world.

In light of International Women’s Day, there were some great publications by those who understand the critical role that women and girls play in building a safe and secure world.

Ann Lewis and Susan Molinar wrote Women and Girls are Key to Security for Politico.

And for his column, Nicholas Kristof wrote Three Proven Steps to Advance the World’s Women.

Indeed, it was a great week, and these remarkable women leaders have gotten a lot more attention than they normally do. But we must remember that their hard work is worthy of an award every day of the year.
