Breaking the Marble Ceiling
By Liz Wing on 04/04/2009 @ 08:00 PM
As a young woman, I get so excited by the chance to work with No Limits and our President Ann Lewis.
Thursday night, Ann was honored by the Young Democrats of America (YDA) and the YDA Women’s Caucus with the first ever “Breaking the Marble Ceiling” award. Atima Omara-Alwala, Chair of the YDA Women’s Caucus, presented the award to Ann, remarking: “We give much credit to women in elected office for the work they do and the marble ceilings they crack, but we forget often about those women like Ann Lewis who are behind the scenes working hard every day to chip away at the marble and make it possible for us to finally one day, break through.”
The event was bursting with talented women: leaders of women’s organizations, campaign veterans, and lots of young women. As Ann said when she looked out among the crowd, there were “many future legislators and campaign managers in the room.” Such an important piece to advancing our political participation is encouraging each other. Ann gets that.
She closed with this: “In 2008, Hillary didn’t just put 18 million cracks in the ceiling – she opened the door for all of us. Now it’s up to us to keep going."
Like Hillary, Ann has opened the door, broken the marble ceiling and paved the way!
