An Important Victory

By No Limits on 05/21/2009 @ 07:52 PM

An unfortunate reality is that across the country, thousands of rape kits sit untested, simply because they lack the support and funding needed to properly test them and use them in court. Rape kits are the best and most effective way to convict attackers, and they are far from pleasant for the victims to go through them.

This week, LA City Council approved the budget and they have in fact funded a system that will eradicate the backlog of untested rape kits AND hold the LAPD accountable for the expenditure of funds allocated. As Hollywood NOW President, and new City Councilmember, our member, Lindsey Horvath led the charge!

Lindsey says,

“Hollywood NOW thanks LA City Council for doing the right thing - not just by giving funds but also by holding LAPD accountable for their procedures. Over the next two years, we will eradicate the backlog of untested rape kit evidence as long as the Council continues to work with LAPD on a system that holds everyone accountable.”

An important victory indeed. Congrats to those who worked long and hard on this!
