Too Big to Sue?

By Suolan Jiang on 06/21/2011 @ 03:00 PM

People rallied in front of the U.S. Supreme Court today for equal pay for the women of Wal-mart. Women’s organizations, including National Women’s Law Center, National Partnership for Women and Families, and the National Organization for Women, rallied with other citizens to express their disagreement with the Supreme Court’s ruling. Yesterday, the Supreme Court blocked the biggest class-action lawsuit in history, preventing 1.5 million women from filing suit together in gender discrimination changes against Wal-mart.

We presented the evidence of the sex discrimination in our April 5th newletter:

Evidence presented by the plaintiffs includes: women earning nearly a quarter less, on average, than men, despite greater average seniority and higher performance ratings; women concentrated in lower-paying hourly jobs and being paid less even when they held the same jobs as men; women receiving raises at a slower rate than men; women waiting longer for promotions and serving in management in proportions dramatically lower than the retailer's competitors.

The fight for justice has just begun for the women of Wal-mart, and we stand with them.

Here are some pictures of today’s rally.
