U.S. Agency for International Development, USAID, is an independent government agency which provides aid for economic growth, global health, humanitarian assistance, and conflict resolution and prevention. “From November 25 to December 10, USAID will amplify efforts to bring much-needed attention to the reality of millions of women around the world who are victims of violence and abuse. The 16 Days Campaign provides us with an opportunity to share with you what USAID is doing on behalf of the American people to promote equal rights and end violence against women around the world.”
The USAID blog, IMPACT, has been focusing on issues related to this cause. Topics so far have included, the forced marriage of girls, the impact of economic development on women, and the increased risk of transmission of HIV/AIDS to women in Sub-Saharan Africa. They will write every day, over the 16 days, about a different global issue relating to women and girls.
USAID is encouraging all Americans to get involved in the 16 Days Campaign. Update your Facebooks and Twitters with information blasts, short posts which call attention to injustices facing women and girls around the world. (Examples of these short info blasts can be found here.) They also suggest you share the IMPACT blog posts with your friends and families.
“The human race cannot progress when half of the world population lives without the same rights and respect afforded to its male counterpart.” – U.S. Agency for International Development
